Senior Relocation

When Seniors can no longer live safely and securely in their homes due to illness or aging, they can experience an extreme amount of stress when trying to make the initial decision and even more while going through the actual moving process.  The move to a retirement community, nursing care center, hospice, or even another family member’s home can sometimes be overwhelming for families. It’s more than just packing boxes with household items and selling a home. It’s also sorting through years of cherished belongings, memories and items that has been so carefully stored for years.

It is very important for family members to be aware that there are things that they can do to help make the move easier on their loved ones and themselves.  Here are a few suggestions:
  • Try to involve the senior in the decision and planning process.
  • If any concerns are expressed, take them seriously and let them know that you are open for a discussion.
  • Whenever possible, allow the senior to feel like he or she is in control.
  • Figure out a way to make sure that personal possessions are safe.
  • Work together to set up the new apartment or room and make it look as much like home as possible.
  • Spend time with the senior to help him/her to get acclimated.
  • Consider hiring a professional to assist with the relocation.
Being proactive, thinking ahead and respecting your senior loved one through this transition will make for a less stressful move for everyone involved!

My grandmother needs to move from Lauderdale to Miami, closer to where everyone lives due to her age, and I'm looking for advice to make this process easier for her. I like that you recommend making sure that the senior is involved so they feel like they can still make decisions. I will definitely take into account what you recommended to ensure that my grandmother feels more comfortable.
